This September, Ministry Of Hemp had the pleasure of attending the Hemp & CBD Expo in Birmingham in the UK.

This two-day event was the second UK Hemp & CBD Expo this year, following a successful outing in March, and saw proceedings move up to a larger space to incorporate all the stalls, speakers and visitors keen to learn more about hemp and CBD in the UK.

Compared to other cannabis-related events, such as Cannabis Europa, which was held in London in June, the Hemp & CBD Expo is a much more consumer-friendly occasion, looking at the real-life benefits of hemp and CBD. Cannabis Europa, and other similar expos have a much more corporate feel, with the focus solely on how to make money out of this natural plant — which many in the UK CBD community feel puts profit over people.

Thankfully, the Hemp & CBD Expo took a much more holistic view, and while there was a dedicated business speaker’s stage, it certainly wasn’t the sole focus of the event.

UK Hemp & CBD Expo opens to a buzz of excitement

Spanning Saturday and Sunday, the expo was held in Hall 17, at the far, far end of the Birmingham NEC, which proved difficult to reach for some people I spoke to, particularly those in wheelchairs and people using CBD to help with arthritis. Location issues aside, on the Saturday there was a palpable buzz of excitement, with many hundreds, if not thousands, of people involved in, or curious about, the world of hemp and CBD packed into the hall.

There were many dozens of stalls and exhibitors laid out, covering practically every aspect of CBD and hemp. One of the first booths was the futuristically-named Advanced Dynamics, with an equally futuristic array of complex machinery – a swirl of tubes, lights and metal poles – promising to cater for all your filling, capping and labelling needs.

A range of exhibitors both big & small

The companies with massive investment were notable by their huge exhibitor spaces and tendency toward all-white decor. GenCanna, an American company, were certainly one of the most visible, and with their staff decked out in sharp fitted suits, added a professional air, if possibly a little more corporate than the rest.

Green Stem CBD also made a strong showing, with an impressive stall and remarkably knowledgeable and friendly staff. There was a confidence about their products, due in no small part to their winning five out of the seven awards they were nominated for at the first Hemp & CBD Expo back in March. With the recent announcement that UK celebrity Jenny Powell has signed up as their brand ambassador, it’s clear that Green Stem have the finances and profile to become a key player in the future of CBD in the UK.

Speakers talk everything from medicine to business at UK Hemp & CBD Expo

Stalls aside, the most interesting element of the expo were the two stages – the main stage, with enough seating for a hundred or so people, and the smaller — but no less interesting — business pro stage.

One of the most interesting talks came early on the Saturday, thanks to Michael Fisher from the Teesside Cannabis Club. Michael came as a breath of fresh air. He’s a genuinely passionate cannabis activist from Middlesborough in the Northeast of England. His cannabis club formed in 2014 and provides a safe space for people to consume cannabis without having to worry about getting arrested. He delivered an emotional speech, covering the legalities and difficulties of his cannabis club, plus the varied benefits it has brought to the people of Middlesborough.

One of the most high-profile names in hemp, CBD and medical cannabis in the UK is published author Callie Blackwell, who spoke movingly about her eldest son being diagnosed with cancer, and how holistic methods have helped them over recent months and years.

Credible speakers like Dr. Dani Gordon expel CBD’s ‘snake oil’ reputation

There were some interesting points made by Christian and Frederik Hendriksen from Mile High Labs, looking at the technicalities of running a CBD business, such as dealing with the ever-present novel foods issue, as well as employing GPS and sealed containers when transporting CBD isolate. One of the most well-informed speakers on the UK CBD and hemp circuit is Peter Reynolds, who delivered a wide-ranging talk on the Sunday, taking a grounded look at everything from legalisation to the potential impact of Brexit on the future of medical cannabis in the UK.

Photo: Dr. Dani Gordon speaks on the Business Stage at the UK Hemp & CBD Expo in Birmingham.
Speakers like Dr. Dani Gordon helped bust myths about CBD and improve the reputation of the supplement with scientific facts. (Ministry of Hemp / Ian Jones)

The talks and panels on the business stage were just as fascinating, if a little more complex. Dr. Dani Gordon gave a myth-busting doctor’s guide to CBD, looking at how it can affect the female reproductive system, anxiety and much more. It’s clear that the CBD industry in the UK needs to focus more closely on credible speakers like Dr. Gordon if it’s going to shake off the ‘snake oil’ reputation that has blown up around it in recent months.

The most expensive seeds on the planet?

Nick Tulloch from Zoetic Premium CBD was another engaging speaker on the business pro stage on the Sunday, talking about the behind-the-scenes aspects of the worldwide CBD business. He made the remarkable point that his company pays a dollar per seed for hemp plants. This might sound extraordinarily expensive but these seeds have undergone testing to ensure they’re entirely female, completely sidestepping the useless male plants and producing only useful yields of hemp.

The Hemp & CBD Expo is the UK’s first hemp trade show, and this second event built on the success of the first, showcasing a huge range of knowledgeable speakers and largely credible high-end exhibitors. Talking to various guests it’s clear that no one really knows where the UK CBD industry is headed, and until we have a clear vision of the future businesses are forced to move carefully, lest the entire industry is up-ended. Brexit is at the front of many peoples minds, with Peter Reynolds in particular opining that a break from the European Union will be of great benefit for CBD in the UK.

UK Hemp & CBD Expo focuses on advocates and enthusiasts rather than ‘Big Business’

There will undoubtedly be more events in the coming years, and each one will bring us closer to the final vision of where hemp, CBD and medical cannabis stands in the UK.

Aside from issues of legislation and legality, the range of speakers was admirable. The preponderance of CBD enthusiasts and advocates, such as Michael Fisher and Dr. Dani Gordon, was a welcome change from the big-business focus of other cannabis and CBD trade events over the past year.

The Canna Kitchen Raided: Why Did UK Police Raid CBD Eatery? https://ministryofhemp.com/canna-kitchen-raided/ https://ministryofhemp.com/canna-kitchen-raided/#respond Tue, 11 Jun 2019 20:38:25 +0000 http://ministryofhemp.com/?p=57576 Earlier this year, we wrote about the UK’s first CBD restaurant. Last month, police raided that restaurant.

Last month, police raided The Canna Kitchen, a unique CBD-themed eatery in the UK.

Earlier this year, we wrote about the UK’s first CBD restaurant.

The Canna Kitchen opened in late 2018 in Brighton. It was an instant success with local diners and received acres of press coverage in major publications all over the world. Since then, things have taken a dramatic turn.

According to news reports, on Wednesday, May 8th, the venue was raided by the police. They seized a substantial amount of herbal cannabis. There were no arrests, though one man was interviewed under police caution.

We wanted to get to the bottom of what happened, and also find out how the UK’s hemp industry reacted.

FROM A SUCCESSFUL START TO A RAID BY THE POLICE

The next day, the restaurant released a statement through its Facebook page. The owners thanked people for their support and explained they were closing while they take legal advice.

“The products that we sell are no different to those which are sold by many, many companies all over the UK.”

Sam Evolution, Founder of The Canna Kitchen

The owners of Canna Kitchen say the product seized at the premises is industrial hemp which is legally imported. They affirmed that all their products for sale are legal. “Our products are defined as industrial hemp, and are clearly and transparently imported as such, with all taxes and duties paid,” they said. They added that their products are “in line with UK legal guidelines for pharmaceutical definitions.”

Explaining the ramifications for the UK CBD industry, they went on to say “If trace elements of THC render these products illegal, then by default all CBD products must be illegal in the UK. This would mean that many large high street chains are currently breaking the law.”

To find out more about what this means for CBD and hemp in the UK, we spoke to a number of figures in the UK CBD industry. However, the majority were unwilling to speak on the record about such a delicate subject.

WHAT DO OTHERS IN THE UK CBD INDUSTRY THINK?

One of the few people to agree to comment was Guy Coxall. A leading figure in UK cannabis and hemp circles, Coxall is the compliance director at CTA UK, a non-profit dedicated to supporting CBD, cannabis and hemp businesses. While you might expect him to be critical of the police in this case, his response was quite the opposite.

“Having assessed the media coverage around Canna Kitchen, it seems that they have irresponsibly flouted the laws on multiple levels,” he said. Some reasons he listed included “importing whole flower, suspected use of isolates in food and medical claims.”

Some CBD and hemp advocates and business owners in the UK criticized The Canna Kitchen for ignoring regulations in ways they feared could hurt the whole industry. (Photo: Manchester’s CBD Coffee Lounge)

Coxall also criticized The Canna Kitchen’s response to the raids.

“The worst offence, in my opinion, is that once caught, they tried to cover their own backs by implying that the entire CBD industry is illegal,” he said. “When there are approximately 1.2 million people in the UK who regularly use CBD products, their attitude of ‘If we go down then we will take everyone else’ is disturbing and shocking.”

He opts for a conciliatory approach with the authorities, in a bid to keep things above board and strictly within the law.

“Those of us who work hard for this industry, strive to keep CBD products available by working alongside the regulatory bodies. The whole industry needs to unite and self-regulate to ensure its future. For the past few years we have been winning a good fight but irresponsible companies such as Canna Kitchen make this increasingly more difficult.”

UK CBD INDUSTRY DIVIDED OVER CANNA KITCHEN RAIDS

“They tried to cover their own backs by implying that the entire CBD industry is illegal.”

Guy Coxall, UK hemp advocate

In response, Sam Evolution, the founder of Canna Kitchen, stated that all their actions were firmly within the law.

“We received police and trading standards approval on all the products we sell. Products which are legally imported into the country have been signed off by customs with full clearance after duties and VAT have been paid,” he said.

He refutes many of Guy Coxall’s points. “We have never used CBD isolate in any of our food, and we don’t stock it,” said Evolution.

“We’re very careful not to make any medical claims about our products and services, due to the fact that we are not trained medical professionals. The products that we sell are no different to those which are sold by many, many companies all over the UK.”

THE UK CBD INDUSTRY IS IN A DELICATE STATE

Ian Fox, who runs the CBD Coffee Lounge in Manchester, was also willing to go on the record. Fox’s thriving cafe-shop business sells CBD products, hot drinks, and CBD-infused edibles. While disheartened about the news, like Coxall, he took a dim view of Canna Kitchen’s actions.

“It’s very dismaying to hear this news about Canna Kitchen, but it doesn’t come as a surprise,” said Fox. “I was talking to some friends today who are CBD suppliers, and they were angry at the actions of the owner of Canna Kitchen, for potentially jeopardising the trade for everyone else, through what could be deemed to be reckless actions.”

With his own business, Fox takes a more cautious approach, aware that while the UK CBD industry is in its infancy pushing the boundaries could lead to increased scrutiny.

“I’ve always been concerned right from the very beginning that we could get a visit,” he said. “So I’m still not selling CBD flower and I’m also reluctant to do more edibles at the moment.”

Appetizers served on a white plate at The Canna Kitchen.
Sam Evolution, founder of The Canna Kitchen, the raided CBD restaurant insists they’ve done nothing wrong. (Photo: Appetizers at The Canna Kitchen)

Fox also pointed out that Canna Kitchen had been advertising a ‘THC night’ on their website. When asked about this, Evolution explained that in this instance ‘THC’ is an acronym for ‘The Herbal Chef,’ AKA Chris Sayeh, who flew over to host a five course CBD-infused dining experience. However, events and promotions like this could be seen as blurring the lines between the illegal and legal elements of hemp — something industry representatives such as Coxall regard as reckless.

DID CANNA KITCHEN DO ANYTHING WRONG?

On the other hand, it could be argued that Canna Kitchen have done nothing overtly wrong, apart from engaging in some creative marketing. And if this raises awareness of CBD among the public, demystifying the properties of hemp, is that such a bad thing?

One thing’s for sure, it’s a thorny issue, causing divisions across the industry. The legal case against Evolution and Canna Kitchen is ongoing. It threatens to have major implications for the UK CBD industry so we’ll be keeping a close eye on the outcome.

Of course, this case doesn’t exist in isolation, and the current upheaval in UK politics could play a part too.

As Ian Fox points out, “A lot of us in the industry are hoping that there’ll be a change of government soon and that could potentially bring about much-awaited change and bring an end to these draconian laws.”

Wishful thinking? With the current state of the UK government, and the unstoppable rise of the worldwide CBD and cannabis industry, anything’s possible.

Correction 6/12/2019: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that there was an arrest during the raid on The Canna Kitchen. There were no arrests.

One Aberdeen-based firm specialises in CBD liquor: rum and gin infused with hemp and CBD.

So, you’ve tried the UK’s best CBD beer, but now you’re keen to try something with a little more kick? Wee Hemp Spirits have exactly what you’re looking for. It’s not only a first for the UK but possibly the world at large.

This Scottish Company Combines CBD And Liquor

The people behind the first CBD liquor are husband and wife team Calum and Rebecca Napier. They also run The Wee Hemp Company, a CBD-based firm which won Scotland’s Micro Business of the Year in 2019’s FSB Awards. We spoke to Calum about the origins, development and future plans of their journey in CBD spirits.

The Wee Hemp Company was launched in May 2018, largely thanks to Rebecca’s inspiring experiences with CBD.

Photo: Two bottles of CBD liquor posed in front of a waterfall: CBD-infused gin and CBD-infused rum.
Canna B have created unique CBD liquors that are also infused with hemp seed oils and delicious other botanicals.

“Rebecca has suffered with Crohn’s disease since she was five years old, and in 2016 she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic illness that causes pain all over the body,” said Calum. “I did some research and found that in America many people were using CBD to help with fibromyalgia so we took a weekend trip to Amsterdam and purchased some.”

The changes were remarkable. “Over the next few months Rebecca regained her life back,” said Calum. “She changed her diet, did intolerance tests and had great success using CBD. We then trialled many different CBD products before jetting off to a lab in Europe to create our own product line and start our own company.”

In these early days the duo looked into growing four acres of hemp in Aberdeen, but the UK government made it near-impossible to gain the appropriate licenses. Then they had the idea of experimenting with hemp as a botanical in distilling spirits.

World First CBD Liquor Aging Technique

“We contacted a local distillery and they were more than happy to let us do some experimenting with our hemp in their facility. Over the next few months we perfected the recipes and Wee Hemp Spirits was born!”

Wee Hemp Spirits currently offers hemp-infused Canna’B Gin and Canna’B Rum, with a full spectrum limited edition CBD-infused Canna’B Spirits about to be released.

“All spirits have hemp seeds and hemp plant material as botanicals,” said Calum. “The rum has been aged in charred hemp stalks. This is a world’s first aging technique that gives our rum a subtle smoky yet sweet finish, and a beautiful golden colour.”

The name ‘Canna’B’ is a smart play on Scottish dialect, pronounced ‘cannae be,’ as in ‘cannot be.’ It also serves as a neat reference to the cannabis sativa L plant and the bees which provide the honey used in these CBD liquor products.

Even The Water Is The Best Available

This impressive attention to detail even goes as far as the H2O used to create the spirits.

“The water used in each of these is from the Cairngorms,” explained Calum. “It’s been filtering through the cracks and rock formations for 50 years before ending up in Canna’B.”

According to Calum, the special water gives the flavors in his CBD liquor “more depth.”

Even the water used by Wee Hemp Spirits is carefully selected to enhance the flavor and effectiveness of their CBD liquor. Photo: A rum and coke with ice in a lowball glass, sitting on a table at the edge of a blurry nature scene.
Even the water used by Wee Hemp Spirits is carefully selected to enhance the flavor and effectiveness of their CBD liquor.

When it comes to the actual creation of these spirits, it’s a multi-layered process, simple in parts, complicated in others, that serves to create a wonderful handcrafted artisan product.

“The hemp seeds and plant material are steeped with our other botanicals to give more depth of flavour before it is distilled in small 250 litre batches,” said Calum.

“The rum is then aged in charred hemp stalks giving it the smokiness and glorious golden colour. When the spirits are ready, a percentage are infused with our full spectrum water soluble CBD and sent away for cannabinoid profile analysis, before Rebecca and I begin the process of bottling, corking, sealing, labelling and quality checking each and every bottle.”

Plans For The Future

And it doesn’t stop there. The founders have big ideas for the future.

“Our plans are to expand our Canna’B product line into many more spirits, utilising our unique ageing technique,” said Calum.

“Rebecca has been experimenting with CBD-infused vegan chocolates and full spectrum CBD-infused Canna’B rum and raisin fudge — which, I might add, is next level!”

Calum has his sights set on more than just CBD liquor:

“Wee are not just a CBD company however. Hemp can be used for just about anything, so expanding our portfolio is on the horizon. We’re looking at a solution for the plastic crisis with biodegradable hemp plastic, hempcrete for sustainable housing projects with local building companies, and fashion from 100% hemp fabrics – these are just a few areas we wish to expand into. We want this ancient plant to make a big comeback. And why not, after decades of demonisation it deserves it.”

The Legal Tide Is Turning

In a sign that the UK government is finally coming round to the idea of CBD oil products, Calum and Rebecca found the legal process of bringing their products to market surprisingly easy.

“There have been zero issues,” explained Calum. ”In fact the response has been very welcoming, and everyone is excited to try and stock Canna’B. It appears the stigma is being broken down day by day.”

The tide is certainly turning, not just in the UK but worldwide. Some of the biggest alcohol companies in the world are investing many millions of dollars in acquiring cannabis producers and research facilities. It’s clear this crossover market is on the verge of exploding and boutique companies like Wee Hemp Spirits are right at the cutting edge. If you’re a CBD user and enjoy a drink, the future is set to be very bright indeed.

You can buy Canna’B products online and in various stockists across the UK (see their website for more details). Wee Spirits are looking at expanding into other markets around the world, depending on local laws.

The Canna Kitchen is a vegan and vegetarian restaurant that opened at the end of 2018 in Brighton, England. It’s also the UK’s first restaurant to infuse their dishes with CBD and other similar cannabinoids.

Interest in all things hemp and CBD-related is booming in the UK. As a result, this restaurant immediately became a sensation, with acres of coverage in the British press.

Brighton has long been regarded as one of the UK’s most bohemian and forward-thinking cities. It makes perfect sense for this location to be the origin of what promises to be a groundbreaking development in the world of food and CBD. We spoke to the founder of The Canna Kitchen, Sam Evolution, about the evolution and execution of his one-of-a-kind CBD restaurant.

THE UK’S MOST BOHEMIAN CITY IS THE IDEAL HOME FOR HEMP AND FOOD

“I’ve been involved with hemp for over eleven years,” said Sam Evolution. “Owning businesses that specialised in creating hemp-based products such as dermatological creams and food products.”

Like many people involved in this relatively new industry, Evolution has a strong appreciation for just how revolutionary CBD and hemp can be for the world at large.

“I’ve always been inspired by the rich history of hemp,” Evolution agreed. “Particularly its potential to revolutionise agriculture, industry and health.”

But when it came to combining CBD with a sit-down restaurant concept, the idea came from some good old-fashioned home testing.

“The initial idea came about a year ago when doing some personal experimentation with friends, involving food and flavonoids from the plant,” Evolution said.

Then the idea came to combine cannabinoids with high quality organic foods, which led to the complex and exciting menu The Canna Kitchen offers today.

HEALTHY AND WELL-BALANCED VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN DISHES INFUSED WITH CBD

These dishes includes a classic vegan buddha bowl, featuring seasonal roast root vegetables, homemade hummus and fresh salad, with a CBD-infused tahini cream drizzled across the top. Or the canna sandwich, which offers a choice of harissa tofu or haloumi, on locally-sourced sourdough bread, paired with a salad and CBD dressing. For dessert, you can finish off your meal with the canna Snickers bar, loosely based on the well-known chocolate bar, put together using homemade cake, layered with date caramel on top of a hemp brownie biscuit base, then coated with dark chocolate and nut sprinkles.

“Our mission is to change the way people think about the cannabis plant.” — Sam Evolution, founder of The Canna Kitchen

From a personal perspective, Evolution has had impressive results using CBD.

“I’ve found that CBD to be extremely effective at helping to manage pain,” he told us. ”It decreases aches in the body due to its anti-inflammatory properties and interaction with the bodies endocannabinoid system. Many people report assistance dealing with stress and anxiety, and some find it can help with sleep.”

CBD RESTAURANT IS FIGHTING AGAINST UNHELPFUL STEREOTYPES

The misconception that CBD and hemp are tied up with a darker drug culture is something Evolution and The Canna Kitchen are keen to dispell. Indeed, the mission statement on the website states clearly, “We at The Canna Kitchen aim to redress dated stereotypes mislabelling this extraordinary natural resource purely as a recreational substance.”

This meant taking a cautious approach when it came to the legal sides of setting up a CBD-based restaurant.

“I had to present my plans concisely to local authorities, and my approach was very carefully considered,” Evolution said.

The hemp used in preparing the dishes used at The Canna Kitchen is also carefully sourced. CBD business-owners must have a delicate touch in the UK when it comes to working with this product, as the authorities remain wary of its legal status.

“Our hemp is grown for us organically in Spain and Switzerland,” said Evolution.

“And we ensure any trace elements of THC are within legal limits,” showing just how careful the UK hemp-user must be when working with this plant.

THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD IS OF EQUAL PRIORITY

But it’s not all about the potential health benefits of CBD. Evolution made it clear that the ideas and flavour balance behind the food are equally important:

“Our food is contemporary and fresh, using locally sourced and organic produce wherever possible. Our mission is to change the way people think about the cannabis plant by creating beautiful vegetarian dishes which are tastefully complimented with its infusion.”

The process wasn’t easy, at least not at first.

“There was certainly an amount of trial and error in the beginning,” said Evolution. “Finding balance between flavours has been the most challenging aspect for us but we now feel that we have a good understanding of this, and we’re continuing to experiment in new and interesting ways.”

A FULL MEAL PROVIDES A RELAXING DOSE OF CBD

But how much CBD could you expect to consume over the course of a meal? Evolution estimated this at “between 20 and 30mg of CBD, depending on the drinks that are ordered and any sides.”

For the average person, this is enough to gain a beneficial effect, whether the goal is simply relaxation, or for something more substantial such as pain reduction.

Indeed, their website has a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer: “The optional infusion of cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG and CBN with food, may lead to a sense of relaxation, peace and well-being.”

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR UK’S FIRST CBD RESTAURANT

When it comes to future plans, Evolution is cautiously optimistic, taking care not to move too quickly, despite the success so far.

“We are in talks currently with potential partners and investors,” he said. “And we’re planning to roll the idea out over the UK in franchise form.”

It’s clear that The Canna Kitchen won’t be the last CBD restaurant to open in the UK. We’re already aware of numerous cafes popping up offering similar products. The UK is finally waking up to the eco-friendly nature of hemp and the helpful effects of cannabinoids, and the public demand is set to grow and grow.

Growing Hemp In The UK: Regulations Stand In The Way Of Massive Opportunity https://ministryofhemp.com/uk-hemp/ https://ministryofhemp.com/uk-hemp/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 18:11:15 +0000 http://ministryofhemp.com/?p=54625 Despite a long history of growing hemp in the UK, by 1928 hemp was outlawed. Legalized again in 1993, organizations like the British Hemp Association are trying to overcome remaining legal barriers to the industry's success.

]]>
There’s a long history of growing hemp in the UK. From Celts that taught women to sew and weave the fibre as early as 373 BC, to its abundance in the Elizabethan era when naval ships relied on hemp sails, rigging ropes and sacks, the crop is a common thread running throughout the history books.

By the twentieth century it had been marginalised, with its many functional uses inextricably tangled up with concerns around the psychoactive parts of the plant. By 1928, hemp was outlawed.

A densely packed hemp field with a forest in the background. It was illegal to grow hemp in the UK from 1928 to 1993, but advocates say strict regulations still stand in the way of a successful hemp industry.
It was illegal to grow hemp in the UK from 1928 to 1993, but advocates say strict regulations still stand in the way of a successful hemp industry.

That ban lasted no less than 65 years with permission to grow industrial hemp only reinstated as a legal activity for license holders in 1993. And crucially, according to members of the newly formed British Hemp Association (BHA), there remain a number of restrictions in place that hamper the huge opportunity for a thriving hemp sector in the country.

HOW MUCH INTEREST IS THERE IN HEMP IN THE UK?

Only launched this year the formation of the BHA coincides with the crop “gaining a lot more traction” in the UK and a growing number of farmers keen to get involved, said one of its directors Rob Kinghan.

A number of factors lie behind this surge in interest, he explained. Not least the rapid growth of the cannabinoid industry in the health and supplement market which has “injected a huge amount of interest back in the industry.” High street retailers, such as health food chain Holland and Barrett, are actively increasing the number of CBD products they stock, while brands such as Coca Cola consider CBD soft drinks and established restaurants market CBD menus.

Added to that is the recent decision by the UK government to legalise ‘cannabis-derived medicinal products’ where prescribed by a registered doctor. Shortly before the legislation was passed a national survey found that 43 percent of people supported the legalisation of all derivatives of the plant, including psychoactive cannabis.

A hand holding a hemp leaf. Prejudices against hemp and all forms of cannabis are beginning to fade in the UK, with 43 percent supporting total legalization of psychoactive cannabis ("marijuana") in a recent survey.
Prejudices against hemp and all forms of cannabis are beginning to fade in the UK, with 43 percent supporting total legalization of psychoactive cannabis (“marijuana”) in a recent survey.

All which is significant — not because growing the arable crop requires any associations with the psychoactive elements of the plant — but because it reflects a growing education and awareness among the UK public toward hemp as a whole, and therefore a removal of the prejudices that led to its criminalisation in the first place.

In short, there is “a general awakening of the benefits of hemp as an agricultural crop,” said Kinghan and, as a result, those interested in growing industrial hemp have grown considerably, with some talk of the UK being a prime location for extraction and processing sites. Only regulation stands in the way of a thriving industry, hemp advocates said.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO GROW HEMP IN THE UK?

The BHA formed “to educate, lobby and commit,” summed up its chair Rebekah Shaman.

“Educate on the importance of hemp, lobby the government for changes and to collect industry together so we become one voice.”

In other words, it was set up to bring the rules around hemp in line with a shift in public consciousness of the crop.

“There’s an incredible shift in public opinion, everyone loves hemp,” said Shaman. “In 2007, I was making a hemp porridge and people thought they could get stoned on it. That was 12 years ago and it was a nightmare trying to get hemp out there, nobody wanted to touch it. Now everyone knows about it.”

Farming hemp in the UK remains a tiny industry though, with an estimated 810 hectares (about 2000 acres) under cultivation currently, compared to 33,000 hectares (over 81,000 acres) across Europe.

That’s largely as the legislation around it remains prohibitive, believe the BHA, with the government trapped in a “conservative and regressive licensing system that isn’t flexible or responsive to this changing demand for the hemp industry,” Kinghan said. Applications for licenses, costing £580 (about $740), are now often limited to one year (where previously it was three) and applicants are even required in some cases to prevent full business plans with potential buyers set out for each part of the legal plant. Unsurprisingly that “creates a huge barrier” to new potential entrants to the market.

WHAT CHANGES ARE UK HEMP ADVOCATES CALLING FOR?

Whole plant hemp processing

One of the major changes being called for by the group is a lifting of the restriction that prevents the leaf and flower of the plant from being processed.

A hemp field, with young green hemp plants growing in many long densely packed rows. Under current regulations on hemp in the UK, farmers are forced to destroy large portions of the plant, while simultaneously the UK imports "millions of pounds worth of CBD" every year.

Already confined to farming hemp for the fibre and the seed, a tightening up in procedure last year now requires growers to physically destroy all other “contraband” green materials on site, said Kinghan, while at the same time the UK imports “millions of pounds worth of CBD” from elsewhere in the world, an entirely legal cannabinoid.

“The money is in the leaf and the flower so by removing that opportunity for extractors and processors we’re having to rely on imports without giving our farmers an opportunity to be part of the gain,” said Shaman. As part of its ‘Whole Plant’ campaign the BHA is set to argue that farmers should be able to sell the leaf and flower to licensed processors instead, removing any concerns around selling direct to the public and subsequent confusion.

Who controls UK hemp?

For Shaman there is then the question of which government department should oversee the crop. Currently, with much of the plant still classed as a controlled substance, it is the Home Office rather than the Department for Environmental Farming and Rural Affairs (under which all other arable crops sit) that takes the lead. With experience in agriculture not housed in the Home Office, she argued, “that is crippling the industry.”

Shaman continued:

This is an industrial crop that could be turned into bioplastics, bio-diesel or fuel and yet we’re not given an opportunity because it’s not seen as an industrially agricultural crop, it’s seen as a demon crop. While under auspices of the Home Office we can’t move it forward.

We have to take the whole conspiracy away from what hemp is and see it for what it is, a super environmentally friendly crop that has all sorts of industrial applications, and that can help us with our environmental impact as we choke under the dominance of fossil fuels, plastics and so forth.

That includes, finally, for Shaman and the BHA more stability around acceptable levels of THC, which currently sits at 0.2 percent, down from 0.3 percent previously, following new guidance issued in 2014. “That makes it really difficult to get some varieties grown because the plant naturally produces it,” she said.

IN UK ‘HEMP IS THE NEXT BIG INDUSTRY’

With all this changed both Shaman and Kinghan insist the opportunity for hemp in the UK is huge.

“I think hemp is the next big industry,” said Shaman. “And if we became an industry hub for hemp, creating sustainable products and bioplastics or becoming the supplier for Europe we would start bringing manufacturing back and that creates jobs. Hemp can offer all of that very easily and quickly. And a lot of people want to get involved with it.”

“There’s a real opportunity for UK regulations to lighten with some guidance from experts in the industry to allow many more farmers to grow this crop,” added Kinghan.

“If the government can listen to the needs of the industry we’re chomping at the bit to develop a very wealthy, successful and thriving industry in the UK.”

A new CBD beer is exciting taste buds even as it promotes relaxation.

There are few things in life more relaxing than a cold beer after a hard day at work. Now, what if you infuse that beer with the soothing properties of premium CBD? That’s precisely the idea that friends Carl Boon and Thierry Florit had one evening over a few drinks, which ultimately led to the creation of one of the UK’s first CBD beers.

The result is High Flyer: an India pale ale (IPA) craft beer with a 4.3% ABV and containing 10mg of high-quality CBD in each bottle. Its evolution was far from simple. The two business partners overcame numerous development and legal hurdles along the way.

THE INSPIRED COMBINATION OF CBD AND BEER

Boon runs the successful online CBD company CBDUltra, while Florit is an experienced designer for many major brands. We spoke with them about the long process of turning a booze-soaked idea into a physical product on sale in shops and pubs.

“The idea first came about during a late-night beer tasting session when Carl joked about making a craft beer infused with cannabis oil — essentially a drink that adds nutrients back into the body, rather than just taking them away,” Florit told us, with a laugh.

Like all good ideas, the duo kept returning to it and soon decided to take it seriously. A few weeks later they set up Green Times Brewing as an official company and sourced a unique water-soluble, full-spectrum CBD. Turning to one of Boon’s colleagues, an award-winning brewer, they then underwent the long, but no doubt enjoyable, process of fine-tuning the formula.

“After a year of conducting trials and taste tests, we eventually got the formula and taste profile right,” said Florit. “And came up with with a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes and exotic flavours, resulting in an easy-to-drink IPA with a powerful hop hit and refreshing citrus aftertaste.”

THE LONG PROCESS OF DEVELOPING CBD BEER

As you’d expect, specific details about the CBD beer development process have to remain confidential due to the competitive nature of the market.

“We spent a lot of time testing and trialling so we wouldn’t want to give away all of our secrets,” said Boon.

“The actual production process is exclusive to us, along with the water-soluble CBD. But what we can say is that we work with an award-winning London brewery and follow a traditional brewing method using organic malts and hops. And of course the full spectrum cannabis oil extract, which is also fully organic.”

When it came to the legal side of things, Boon;’s experience in the CBD industry proved invaluable.

“Carl has an excellent knowledge of the regulations regarding the commercialisation of CBD products, though we did have to check with a specialised law firm and all the various UK governmental food and drinks organisations regarding the legalities, to make sure there wouldn’t be any issues when going to market,” Florit said.

This includes ensuring the product contains less than 0.2 percent THC and emphasising on the label that “It won’t get you ‘high’”.

Ironically, considering the stringent restrictions on CBD and cannabis-derived products in UK, the main legal issue came from a very different source.

“We had a problem with the original name, Cloud Nine Brewing. Just as it was ready to go to market it was blocked because it was similar to a wine company in New Zealand,” said Florit.

INITIAL SETBACKS LED TO SUCCESSFUL ORGANIC CBD BEER FORMULA

Undeterred, they used this setback to improve the product. “We re-brewed, rebranded, re-bottled and returned with a new company name. Plus we improved the formula to make it totally organic.”

However, UK laws do have an impact on how CBD is marketed, meaning Boon and Florit have to be careful what they say when promoting the beer.

“Personally, I have been using CBD for some time now,” said Boon. “Mainly for stress relief, to keep zen and for general mental well being — and drinking this beer gives me a real sense of relaxation. But despite all the talk about the potential health benefits of CBD, it is classified as a food supplement so we can’t recommend it for any specific health conditions.”

Anecdotal reports tell a different story, and one that might appeal to those keen to avoid the dreaded morning-after-the-night-before.

“Due to the organic ingredients, fresh hops and cannabinoids, we’ve had customers say that they don’t get hangovers from drinking this,” Boon continued, adding, “But you’ll have to test that for yourself.”

Indeed, these customers may include some famous names considering some of the clients who buy from CBDultra.

Goldie the drum and bass DJ is an avid fan,” noted Boon. “He uses it to deal with anxiety and hypertension. Another customer using our CBD oil has now come off seventeen different prescription painkillers — he did a YouTube video talking about it and it’s had over 2 million hits already!”

THE FUTURE OF CBD BEER? THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

The pair have big plans for the future. Following a November launch in Manchester, they have many stockists lined up across the country and deal with constant requests from a public who are becoming more educated about CBD, and keen to try it in all its forms.

“People are continually asking every day where they can get it,” said Boon. “So the more distributors and stockists we can get on board the better.”

“With regards to markets, we are currently focusing on distributing to the UK, but we may consider exporting across Europe and other parts of the world as more and more countries change their laws on cannabis use.”

A pale, foamy beer in a glass sits next to a capped brown beer bottle chilling in a small pile of ice. The success of the UK's first CBD beer is likely to lead to more CBD-infused brews in the near future.
The success of the UK’s first CBD beer is likely to lead to more CBD-infused brews in the near future.

Expanding the range seems likely too.

“More beers indeed!” Florit said. “We’re looking at a gluten-free version, along with a vegan-friendly High Flyer ale. I’ve always been a huge fan of the German-style wheat beers and Carl loves Indian Pale Ales so let’s see who wins the argument!”

Certainly in the UK, beer is up there as our national drink, alongside tea (which you can also find at CBDultra). That explains the excitement around this brew in both the British press and among the public.

Boon agreed. “We’re genuinely enhancing one of the nation’s favourite drinks, so it’s going to be here to stay!”

After tasting the beer — it’s a delicious light ale, with a satisfying kick from the sativa-derived terpenes — it’s hard to disagree. And considering both beer and CBD are two of the world’s oldest relaxation tools, the only question is why hasn’t this combination happened before?

Thanks to two friends sharing a few drinks and sparking an idea, now we know how tasty CBD beer can be.
